After two acclaimed EPs and a remarkable early career, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Venna presents his debut album, MALIK.
The journey to this moment has been intense. Over the past three years, Venna has toured extensively, returning to London in between shows. Often the youngest musician in the room, these experiences gave him the confidence to take this bold next step.
Venna shares, “The album MALIK was named by my mother the day I was born, 26 years before it was made. A strong name that means ‘King’ or ‘Leader’ in Arabic. A name I’ve lived with all my life, one my closest friends and family call me, and one I’ve grown into.”
Featuring vocals from Jorja Smith, Cari, Leon Thomas, Smino, MIKE, and Venna himself, MALIK is a space to lose yourself and find yourself again. The album also showcases an impressive ensemble of musicians, including Rocco Palladino, Elijah Fox, AoD, J Warner, Marco Bernardis, and longtime collaborator Yussef Dayes.
MALIK reflects the diverse sounds of Venna’s world. He doesn’t want to be confined to jazz alone. His saxophone has shaped tracks for artists like Burna Boy, Beyoncé, Kali Uchis, Wizkid, Knucks, J Hus, and many more. While jazz elements are present, the album also embraces bossa nova, R&B, soul, and rap. “I allow myself to be a vessel of music,” Venna explains. “A stream of consciousness flows through me in the studio. I believe God is present in the music I make and in life itself. This openness gives me the freedom to create without limitations, whether it’s playing sax, producing, singing, or guiding musicians in the room.”
MALIK is a rare artistic statement: a manifestation of Venna’s experiences, vision, and years of craft, yet also an invitation to let go, be present, and immerse yourself in the journey.
